WASHINGTON, D.C. - The following is attributable to Charles Freeman, Senior Vice President for Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
“The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Korea Business Council congratulates President Lee Jae-myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea.
“While Korea is the United States’ sixth largest trade partner and the U.S. is Korea’s second largest trade partner, the U.S.-Korea alliance transcends our countries’ strong economic ties to act as a ballast of democracy, free enterprise, and rule of law in the Indo-Pacific. The Chamber’s commitment to our bilateral economic and commercial engagement remains anchored in the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement—and our belief in eliminating both broad-based tariffs and other barriers that hamper closer economic collaboration. As ongoing bilateral trade consultations continue, the Chamber is hopeful that both sides will successfully resolve non-tariff barriers that shut out U.S. exports and harm American service providers.
“The Chamber is ready to work with the Lee administration to facilitate the enhanced contribution of American business to the Korean market, with particular attention to the healthcare, financial services, energy, and digital economy sectors. In that latter regard, we strongly urge Korea to refrain from implementing platform regulation that would unfairly impact American companies.”
