WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President of the Chamber Technology Engagement Center(C_TEC) Tim Day issued the following statement following House passage of H.R. 3388, legislation on self-driving cars:
“Self-driving vehicles have tremendous potential to make travel safer, enhance worker productivity, increase transportation efficiency, advance economic growth, and increase mobility for the elderly. This legislation, which is technologically neutral and supports innovation and market competition, is a big leap toward capitalizing on the opportunities of this technology.
“We appreciate the work of the subcommittee and full committee members, who passed this bill unanimously out of committee. Their bipartisan consensus shows the importance of this technology and the benefits it will afford Americans. Consistent with the Chamber’s past position on preemption for all modes of transportation, we applaud the committee’s work to strengthen provisions to limit the possibility of excessive litigation that could ultimately delay, hinder, or halt development.”
Throughout this year, C_TEC’s autonomous vehicle working group convened conversations and formed partnerships with stakeholders to help educate policymakers, regulators, and the public about the benefits of self-driving vehicle technologies. The working group represents our diverse membership, including original equipment manufacturers, software companies, insurance providers, and others.
