To the Members of the United States Senate:
As the U.S. Senate considers the nomination of former U.S. Representative Billy Long to be Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce offers the following observations. The Internal Revenue Service needs a leader who is willing to challenge the status quo, rethink outdated systems, and drive real transformation to better serve hard-working taxpayers. We urge quick consideration by the full Senate of Mr. Long’s nomination and look forward to working with him upon his confirmation.
Mr. Long would be the first Commissioner in eight decades who has engaged with the IRS both as a small business owner and a former Member of Congress. This dual perspective equips him to intuitively consider implementing reforms and addressing systemic inefficiencies.
As demonstrated in his confirmation hearing, Mr. Long is a staunch advocate for the American taxpayer. He has indicated his commitment to improve customer service, modernize technology and systems, prioritize taxpayer education and outreach, and enhance compliance while reducing burden on average Americans. We believe he will deter the IRS from targeting industries, as prior Administrations have done, to promote policy outcomes.
We look forward to working with the Senate and Mr. Long to promote a more accountable IRS.
Sincerely,
Neil L. Bradley
