In an industry long rooted in analog workflows and informal systems, ModernTone Studios has built something rare: a creative space that feels both deeply personal and technologically advanced. Founded in 2017, the family-owned recording studio and music school combines professional-grade production services with highly customized education, all supported by enterprise-level technology that can scale without losing the human touch.
That integration of innovation and care is why ModernTone Studios was recognized as a 2025 Honoree in the Tech Innovators category of the CO—100 awards. From first lesson to final mix, this Lafayette, California, studio is built to support long-term creative growth.
A multidisciplinary creative hub powered by precision
ModernTone Studios serves a wide-ranging clientele, including recording artists, bands, young students, emerging professionals, voice actors, and local authors. Its offerings span recording, mixing, mastering, preproduction, arrangement, and artist development, as well as private lessons in guitar, bass, drums, piano, voice, songwriting, and music production.
What distinguishes ModernTone is how seamlessly it connects these services. Automated scheduling, targeted communication, and digital access to recordings and lesson materials ensure clarity and continuity for students while instructors and staff maintain close, individualized relationships with every client.
“Our use of technology has become a signature part of our identity — one that surprises and delights both clients and peers,” explained Owner Jacob Light. “Many are surprised to learn a small local business is behind such enterprise-level systems, especially one that still knows them by name.”
Designing technology to serve creativity
At the core of ModernTone’s innovation is a custom-built Airtable-based operating system that was developed in-house. Integrated with automation tools like Make.com, Zapier, and Acuity Scheduling, the platform centralizes every layer of the business, from appointments and payments to staff coordination, room usage, and client goals.

“Before this system, we relied on separate tools for scheduling, payments, session notes, and communication, making it difficult to track client progress, staff productivity, or studio capacity in a meaningful way,” Light said.
Today, real-time visibility allows the studio to optimize space, staff time, and programming without sacrificing quality. That clarity has enabled ModernTone to launch new offerings, including group programs, artist development tracks, and performance-based ensembles.
“Decisions were often based on intuition rather than data, and any form of growth came with significant friction and strain on our team,” Light told CO—. “We now make decisions based on actual patterns in behavior, revenue, and engagement — not assumptions.”
Technology also plays a role in customer care. Artificial intelligence-powered call summaries help staff identify trends, surface concerns early, and respond thoughtfully. Feedback loops are tracked and discussed weekly to ensure continuous improvement for students.
Scaling without losing the human element
Despite its advanced systems, ModernTone remains grounded in relationships. Instructors are carefully matched to students’ learning styles and goals, and monthly one-on-one check-ins ensure instructional plans evolve alongside each client’s progress.
That personalized approach has led to exceptional retention. Many clients stay with the studio for years, engaging across multiple services as their creative ambitions grow. Light shared an example of a young student who began lessons at age 9 and eventually recorded multiple extended plays and a full-length album. Now, she’s training as a recording engineer herself.
“Her journey reflects what we aim to provide for every client: long-term growth, creative empowerment, and an evolving support system,” he said.
Internally, ModernTone invests heavily in staff training and feedback. New tools are tested collaboratively, and employees are encouraged to suggest improvements, which reinforces a culture where innovation is shared, not imposed.
A modern model for creative services
ModernTone Studios’ recognition as a CO—100 Tech Innovators Honoree goes far beyond its software stack. It’s a reflection of the studio’s philosophy that technology should enhance, not replace, human connection. By blending automation with empathy, data with artistry, and scalability with care, ModernTone has created a forward-thinking model for creative services that allows musicians and creators to grow without outgrowing the studio that supports them.
