For nearly two centuries, Neir's Tavern has been more than a place to eat and drink — it’s been a cornerstone of the local community, a living piece of New York City history, and a testament to resilience in the face of change.
One of the most defining challenges came when the tavern faced a commercial rent crisis that threatened to close its doors permanently. “The single greatest threat to our survival was a commercial rent crisis that nearly closed our near-200-year-old tavern forever,” said Loycent Gordon, the CEO of Neir’s Tavern.
The crisis gained national attention, leading to thousands of customers rallying in support and major media coverage. Ultimately, a NYC grant allowed the landlord to offer a new lease and an affordable price, securing Neir’s future all the way to its 200th anniversary in 2029.

Gordon reflects on the broader lesson: Access to affordable capital is essential for local businesses to survive and thrive.
“Years before the crisis, we were unable to attain an affordable commercial mortgage, which put us in a vulnerable position. Local businesses drive community stability, yet we often fail to participate in the upside of that growth. Affordable capital is key to preserving that value,” explained Gordon.
Looking to the future, Gordon sees technology as a critical advantage for small businesses: “Don’t just rely on the traditional value proposition — leverage AI immediately. It allows a small business to operate with the efficiency of a much larger corporation and reduces labor costs, helping achieve sustainability faster,” he said.
Yet even in a high-tech world, Gordon emphasizes that human connection remains the true competitive edge. Neir’s Tavern thrives because it is a community business, cultivating deep relationships with customers that go beyond transactions.
“Build a community around your business like a moat. People may forget product features, but they will never forget how you made them feel. That is what has kept Neir’s Tavern alive for 196 years,” added Gordon.
Through resilience, innovation, and a focus on community, Neir’s Tavern stands as proof that small businesses can endure — not just by surviving, but by becoming a vital part of the neighborhoods they serve.
