Based in Milford, Michigan, Planterra is an interior landscaping and botanical design firm that has shaped the modern indoor plant industry for more than 50 years.

The company was founded in 1973 by Larry Pliska after he was laid off from a retail plant shop. With no severance pay — only the remaining store inventory — Pliska saw an opportunity instead of a setback.

He secured space in a greenhouse on a private estate in Bloomfield Hills and launched what would become one of the first interior landscaping companies in the United States.

“My father took as much inventory as he could and turned it into a business,” said Shane Pliska, the President of Planterra. “What started in a small greenhouse quickly grew as demand for indoor plants surged.”

That timing proved critical. As glass-clad office buildings became popular in the 1970s, businesses began incorporating plants to make the interiors more welcoming and livable. Planterra was at the forefront of this shift, helping to pioneer a niche industry that continues to thrive today.

Planterra has survived through all of the major geopolitical events over the past 50 years. The challenges have always come back to the fundamentals — cash flow, people, and clients.

Over the decades, the company has weathered economic downturns, industry changes, and global disruptions, including multiple recessions and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Planterra has survived through all of the major geopolitical events over the past 50 years,” said Pliska. “The challenges have always come back to the fundamentals — cash flow, people, and clients.”

Today, Planterra remains one of the largest independent interior landscape companies in North America. Its longevity is rooted in adaptability and strong family leadership, with the business passing from Larry Pliska to his son, Shane. Each generation has molded the company’s strategy to meet changing customer needs and design trends.

“Planterra has reinvented itself in small ways every decade,” explained Pliska. “That willingness to adapt has been key to staying relevant and growing over time.”

For Pliska, the lessons of running a family business for more than half a century are straightforward but powerful.

“My biggest advice is to stay consistent, be persistent, and never give up,” he said.
