As a veteran of Epic, Tegria, and more, Melissa Tran had spent years learning the backend technology that supports healthcare providers. This is when she noticed that electronic health records (EHR) systems weren’t built for the realities of behavioral care. When she stepped into the role of CEO at ProsperityEHR in 2022, she decided to reimagine these legacy systems as an all-in-one platform designed specially for behavioral health clinicians and the practices they run.

Building on ProsperityEHR’s decades-long foundation, Tran led the company through a transformation into a modern solution supporting everything from telehealth and billing to AI-assisted claims review. What began as an effort to modernize a legacy system has grown into a trusted platform now supporting behavioral practices of all sizes, including solo practices, nonprofits, and multi-site organizations nationwide.

Building a platform shaped by clinicians, not coders

Tran realized that most EHR platforms were designed for general medical practices, not the nuanced, data-driven workflows of behavioral health providers. Upon joining ProsperityEHR as CEO, she began a full-scale rebuild with a clinician-first mindset. 

“We … made the hard decision of sunsetting … technologies that had been around for 30 years, taking that knowledge, and putting it into a new modern platform,” Tran told CO—. 

She and her team leveraged their expertise in operations, behavioral health, and software development to reimagine every aspect of the system.

“The main purpose is [getting] information from A to B, and [doing] so in a way that is really easy for people to understand, with clinician input,” said Tran. “We ran a bunch of user studies and research to make sure that each click made sense.”

That rebuilding process also shaped a “tech-driven but human-centered culture,” which has become a point of pride among Tran’s team.

“The product team works closely with client-facing staff and actual users, creating a feedback loop that fuels both innovation and team motivation,” she explained. “Employees know they’re building something that makes a real difference in people’s lives.”

Empowering providers and improving patient care through modern technology

ProsperityEHR’s focus on usability is tied to a larger mission: ensuring clinicians can spend more time with patients, not systems. Inspired by the shortcomings she had seen firsthand, Tran and her team engineered their platform with features tailored to the complexities of mental health work, from Medicaid compliance and group therapy billing to a user-friendly design for overburdened clinicians.

“The product was designed in collaboration with front-line users and shaped by … experience with how fragmented and frustrating behavioral health systems can be,” Tran explained. “Instead of adapting old models, [we] built a modern, cloud-based platform from scratch, emphasizing ease of use, regulatory compliance, and flexible infrastructure.”

One standout innovation is the platform’s group therapy module, which can auto-generate CPT-coded notes and claims for multiple patients in a single session. Another innovation in development is its “human-in-the-loop” AI support, which will enhance intake and decision-making while preserving clinician oversight. These innovations reflect ProsperityEHR’s core philosophy: that behavioral health technology should be efficient, intuitive, and mission-driven — with clinicians at the center of every decision.
