TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, SCIENCE, AND TRANSPORTATION:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports the nomination of former Sen. Bill Nelson to lead the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Sen. Nelson’s experience is unrivalled, with over three decades of service in Congress sponsoring NASA authorization bills while working across the aisle to build bipartisan consensus. Having flown in space himself on the space shuttle Columbia’s 1986 mission, Sen. Nelson well understands the inherent risks and the imperative of America’s return to human deep space exploration.

Leadership is especially important during eras of technological advancement and scientific achievement, exemplified today by the work aboard the International Space Station and exploration of the surface of Mars. With the final test of the Space Launch System in Mississippi on March 18, 2021, it is time for America to once again set its sights upward to the Moon. In his role as Administrator, Sen. Nelson will see that ambition fulfilled.

The Chamber commends Sen. Nelson’s long history of public service. We look forward to working with the Senate to advance his nomination, and appreciate the committee scheduling the April 21 hearing.

Sincerely,

Neil L. Bradley
