For more than three decades, Connecticut-based Cavalier Galleries has stood as a hallmark of vision, craftsmanship, and dedication in the American art world. Its story begins with sculpture: Growing up around his father, Ronald Joseph Cavalier Sr., a pioneering art foundryman, inspired Ron Cavalier to open his own gallery.

In October 1986, Cavalier launched an art gallery in downtown Stamford, Connecticut, with minimal funds, borrowing from his only credit card to purchase pedestals and lighting.

“For the first five years, turning a profit was not a reality. Instead, the focus was on working tirelessly and staying committed to the vision,” Ron Cavalier, President of Cavalier Galleries, recalled.

Despite the challenges, Cavalier Galleries quickly built relationships with collectors, corporations, and developers, placing important works in both public and private settings. Early exhibitions, including a retrospective of Gutzon and Solon Borglum and the first American show of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, established the gallery’s reputation for museum-quality programming and serious curatorial vision.

Consistency and clarity of purpose are what separate those who endure from those who don’t. Ron Cavalier, President of Cavalier Galleries

One of the gallery’s core values has always been making art accessible beyond the walls of a gallery. Initiatives like the Stamford Sculpture Walk and the New York City Public Art Program brought monumental works into public spaces, reinforcing the idea that art should be encountered as part of daily life.

“It was important to show both scholarship and seriousness from the very beginning,” Cavalier said, reflecting on the early efforts that built credibility in a competitive market.

Today, Cavalier Galleries has expanded into multiple locations—including New York City, Greenwich, Nantucket, and Palm Beach—serving a diverse and international clientele of collectors, institutions, and corporations. Despite the growth, the gallery maintains the personalized approach, curatorial rigor, and client focus that have defined it since the beginning.

“Everything you need to succeed is already within you,” Cavalier noted, emphasizing the mindset required to build something meaningful.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, he stresses focus, commitment, and perseverance. “Consistency and clarity of purpose are what separate those who endure from those who don’t,” he said.

Ultimately, Cavalier believes that success comes down to belief and energy: “It comes down to how much you believe in what you’re building and whether you’re willing to give it your full energy, every single day,” he explained.

From a small Stamford gallery with borrowed funds to a nationally recognized institution, Cavalier Galleries demonstrates that vision, resilience, and dedication to both scholarship and public engagement can create a lasting legacy in the art world.
