Based in Reading, Pennsylvania, Unique Snacks has spent more than a century building a reputation as a family-owned leader in the snack industry. Now led by members of the fourth and sixth generations, the company is best known for its pretzels made with fewer, cleaner ingredients—offering consumers a better-for-you alternative across a wide range of dietary needs.
As the company has grown, COO Justin Spannuth says one of its biggest challenges has been staying true to its identity while navigating a rapidly changing and increasingly consolidated industry.
“The challenge wasn’t just keeping up, it was deciding how to respond without losing our identity,” said Spannuth.
He adds that balancing innovation with tradition has required careful leadership, especially as new technologies and systems have been introduced into a long-standing workforce. For Unique Snacks, progress has meant bringing employees along in the process while preserving the company’s core values.
Long-term success isn’t built on one breakthrough moment, it’s built on consistency.Justin Spannuth, COO of Unique Snacks
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Spannuth emphasizes execution over ideas alone.
“Stay grounded in execution,” said Spannuth. “Success ultimately comes down to how consistently and effectively you deliver.”
He encourages founders to build strong teams, stay close to customers, and remain honest about performance, noting that long-term success is built through steady progress rather than quick wins.
After more than 100 years in business, Spannuth says the company’s most important lesson is that consistency—not moments of breakthrough—drives lasting success.
“Long-term success isn’t built on one breakthrough moment, it’s built on consistency,” said Spannuth.
That philosophy continues to guide Unique Snacks as it evolves its product offerings while staying rooted in quality, simplicity, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
