Welcome to our year‑long series celebrating the entrepreneurs and small businesses that have shaped the nation’s economy for 250 years. You can view the entire series here.
Based in Los Angeles, California, and Snowflake, Arizona, Bluestone Sunshields is a sun protection brand. What began as a solution to a problem that Founder Jen Podany encountered firsthand has grown into a business that has focused on building steadily while remaining adaptable as circumstances change.
For Podany, one of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurship has been balancing the demands of running a business with raising a family. As a mother of three young boys, she wanted to be present for her family while continuing to grow Bluestone Sunshields.
Finding that balance, she says, is not something an entrepreneur ever completely masters. Instead, it requires ongoing adjustment and a willingness to adapt as both family and business needs change.
“Finding that work-life balance isn’t something you ever completely master—it’s an ongoing process,” Podany said.
That experience has shaped the way Podany leads the company. Parenting has taught her resilience, patience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure—qualities that have also helped her navigate the unpredictable nature of running a business.
Bluestone Sunshields has faced seasonal shifts, supply chain challenges, and unexpected world events, all of which have required Podany to adjust rather than rely on a perfect plan.
She has learned that entrepreneurship is less about predicting every challenge and more about staying grounded when those challenges arise.
“I’ve learned that success isn’t about having a perfect plan—it’s about being adaptable, staying grounded and continuing to move forward,” Podany said.
That mindset has helped shape both Podany’s approach to leadership and the company’s growth strategy. Rather than focusing solely on rapid expansion, she believes entrepreneurs should build businesses that can remain healthy and sustainable over time.
The idea for Bluestone Sunshields came from listening to my own inner guidance and recognizing a need that wasn’t being met.Jen Podany, Founder of Bluestone Sunshields.
As Bluestone Sunshields approaches its 10th year, Podany points to steady, consistent growth as one of the company’s most meaningful accomplishments. Instead of chasing large milestones, she encourages entrepreneurs to recognize the value of smaller wins along the way.
Her advice is to focus on longevity. Building a sustainable company takes time, and consistent progress can add up over the years.
“Those small wins add up, so celebrate them—they’re what keep you motivated through the inevitable challenges,” Podany said.
That long-term approach also influences how Podany manages the company’s expenses. She believes entrepreneurs should be thoughtful about overhead and avoid taking on additional costs simply because the business is growing.
Larger offices, warehouses, and teams may seem like natural signs of success, but Podany believes growth should be intentional. At Bluestone Sunshields, the company has focused on adapting and maximizing what it already has before taking on additional expenses.
Keeping the business lean has helped the company remain financially healthy and agile. It has also helped Podany manage the personal pressure that can come with entrepreneurship.
When business decisions are made from a place of sustainability rather than pressure, she believes that mindset can spread throughout the company.
A calm and adaptable leader, in her experience, can help create a resilient business.
That philosophy ties back to one of the most important lessons Podany has learned since founding Bluestone Sunshields: Trust your intuition.
The idea for the company came from recognizing a need that wasn’t being met. Podany wasn’t trying to follow a trend or replicate what other businesses were doing. Instead, she listened to her own experience and focused on solving a problem in a way that felt authentic to her.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned is to trust your intuition,” Podany said. “The idea for Bluestone Sunshields came from listening to my own inner guidance and recognizing a need that wasn’t being met.”
For Podany, that willingness to trust her instincts has become an important part of innovation. Entrepreneurs can spend significant time watching competitors and trying to determine what everyone else is doing, but she believes some of the best ideas come from looking inward and paying attention to your own perspective.
That doesn’t mean every instinct will lead to the right answer. Instead, it means being willing to explore an idea that feels meaningful and staying connected to the reason you started the business in the first place.
Podany also encourages entrepreneurs to resist comparing their journeys to those of other business owners. Every company develops differently, and a strategy that works for one entrepreneur may not make sense for another. She believes entrepreneurs should focus on building something meaningful in their own way.
In the case of Bluestone Sunshields, that has meant prioritizing sustainable growth, remaining lean, and staying adaptable while Podany balances the demands of entrepreneurship and family.
The company’s journey illustrates that building a lasting business doesn’t necessarily require rapid expansion or a perfect roadmap. Consistent progress, thoughtful decisions, and a willingness to adapt can create a strong foundation for long-term growth.
For Podany, the process comes back to staying connected to the purpose behind the business and trusting the perspective that inspired it in the first place.
“When you stay connected to your purpose and trust the process, you’re far more likely to create a business that stands the test of time,” Podany said.
