Based in Dayton, Ohio, Gerstner & Sons has specialized in producing handcrafted wooden tool chests, cases, and totes for more than 100 years. Known for its precision craftsmanship and traditional manufacturing methods, the company has maintained its commitment to American-made quality while serving professionals, collectors, and enthusiasts across generations.

Kim Brown, great-granddaughter of Founder Harry Gerstner and the current Vice President of Sales and Marketing, says one of the company’s defining challenges has been balancing heritage with change: “One of the most defining challenges has been navigating the balance between tradition and change,” said Brown.

Rather than chase price, we made a deliberate decision to double down on craftsmanship, American manufacturing, and the long-term value of what we build. Kim Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Gerstner & Sons

As global competition has increased, particularly from lower-cost imports, the company made a deliberate choice to prioritize craftsmanship over price. “Rather than chase price, we made a deliberate decision to double down on craftsmanship, American manufacturing, and the long-term value of what we build,” explained Brown.

For Brown, longevity in business comes down to discipline and clarity of purpose, especially in staying consistent over time. “Don’t underestimate the power of consistency,” she said.

Brown emphasized that long-term success is rarely about one major breakthrough but rather steady execution over decades of work.

At the core of Gerstner & Sons’ philosophy is an unwavering focus on quality, which she describes as the foundation of everything the company has built. “Quality builds reputation, and reputation builds everything else,” she said.

Today, Gerstner & Sons continues to operate as a heritage manufacturer, preserving traditional woodworking techniques while reinforcing its reputation as a symbol of enduring American craftsmanship.
