Based in Effingham, Illinois, John Boos & Co. manufactures premium wood and stainless steel kitchen equipment for both professional chefs and home cooks, with products found in kitchens around the world.

Founded in 1887 by blacksmith Conrad Boos, the company began with a simple yet enduring idea: to create durable tools that meet real kitchen needs. What started as a single product — a wood cutting board made from locally sourced sycamore — has evolved into a globally recognized brand renowned for its craftsmanship and longevity.

“From the beginning, the focus has always been on quality and durability,” said Lisa Bosio, Director of Consumer Products and Strategic Marketing at John Boos & Co. “That commitment is what has allowed us to remain relevant for more than a century.”

Over its 130-plus-year history, the company has navigated shifting markets and evolving customer demands by balancing tradition with innovation. While John Boos continues to rely on precision woodworking and steel fabrication techniques, it has also invested in modernizing its operations to support growth.

To last over a century, you have to respect traditional craftsmanship while staying open to change. Lisa Bosio, Director of Consumer Products and Strategic Marketing at John Boos & Co.

The company recently expanded and upgraded its Boos Steel production facility, growing its Effingham campus to 32 acres. By incorporating advanced machinery and adding new assembly lines, John Boos has increased its production capacity while improving lead times and maintaining its high standards for durability, safety, and design.

“To last over a century, you have to respect traditional craftsmanship while staying open to change,” explained Bosio. “We’re focused on meeting the needs of modern kitchens without losing what makes our products special.”

At the same time, the company has doubled down on the customer experience. With the launch of dedicated customer success teams led by project managers, John Boos now offers more hands-on support throughout the design, manufacturing, and installation process — particularly for its commercial clients.

“People are at the heart of everything we do — from our craftsmen to the customers we serve,” Bosio said. “As we grow, we want to make sure we’re delivering a seamless, high-touch experience every step of the way.”

That people-first mindset, combined with a focus on quality, has helped the company remain a trusted name across generations. Its iconic Boos Blocks are used in home kitchens and professional settings, including those of top chefs.

For entrepreneurs looking to build something that lasts, Bosio points to the company’s long history as proof that simplicity and consistency matter.

“Endurance is the ultimate competitive advantage,” she said. “Find your ‘original Boos Block’ — that one essential product — and execute it with such high-quality craftsmanship that it becomes the standard.”

Remember that trends come and go, but products built to last will always have a place, and John Boos & Co. is living proof of that.
