Following a significant reduction in newly reported cases, the South Korean government began to relax its social distancing measures starting May 6 in favor of “routine prevention measures (distancing in daily life).” The government will allow schools and businesses to reopen in phases and allow gatherings and events to take place provided they follow infection prevention guidelines (e.g. disinfection, ventilation, distancing, mask wearing). The KCDC has advised citizens to continue to exercise caution in their daily lives.

Department of Disease Control Coronavirus Website

On April 22, the Thai cabinet approved siphoning 10% of the fiscal 2020 budgets of each ministry to be allocated to a central fund to fight the pandemic and rehabilitate the economy. The government will get a total of approximately $3.1 billion, with Prime Minister Prayut managing the central fund.

Thailand's National Security Council has extended the country's state of emergency until the end of June, extending the prime minister's sweeping powers to ban large gatherings and prevent anti-government protests. Public push-back given Thailand's relatively low levels of new infections prompted the government spokesperson to affirm that the extension is apolitical and necessary for a possible new wave.

Regulation Issued under Section 9 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005)

The administration has loosened the lockdown and is in the second phase of opening moderate-risk businesses, including malls and large retail shops. With the nationwide curfew shortened by an hour to between 11 pm to 4 am, stadiums and convention venues are among the moderate-risk category of businesses and activities expected to reopen for the third stage of COVID-19 lockdown easing next month.

On May 10, Thailand’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced preparations for stage two of the four-phase reopening process. Thailand is lifting its soft lockdown measures step by step while maintaining a state of emergency and curfew until the end of May.

Export ban on facemasks

Authorities have issued a travel advisory temporarily barring entry to the Kingdom except for Thai nationals with fit-to-fly certificates, and foreigners such as diplomats, shippers, pilots, drivers, and others needed to provide essential services.
