WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and Head of International Affairs Myron Brilliant issued the following statement on the occasion of the first anniversary of the European Court of Justice’s decision in Data Protection Commissioner v Facebook Ireland, Maximillian Schrems (“Schrems II”).
“One year after the U.S.-EU Privacy Shield was struck down by the European Court of Justice, the need for a new data transfer framework has only grown more urgent. Data flows are the lifeblood of the transatlantic economy yet today, American firms find their access to European markets increasingly hampered by legal uncertainty and, in some instances, by data localization requirements. A new Privacy Shield is needed now to support U.S. exporters and investors, accelerate the post-pandemic recovery, and demonstrate that the U.S. and EU are serious about partnering effectively to advance competitiveness. We hope the two sides will move quickly to resolve outstanding differences."
