WASHINGTON, D.C. - Marjorie Chorlins, Senior Vice President for European Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued the following statement today regarding the release of the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package.
“The U.S. Chamber and its members are committed to working with the U.S., EU and other international partners to advance durable and effective climate solutions. We believe there is much common ground on which countries can build to effectively address climate change. The Commission’s Fit for 55 package is an ambitious set of proposals, and we look forward to communicating with officials in detail in the coming weeks.
“We are reviewing in particular the proposed carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) included in the package. Free and fair trade is a bedrock principle for both the U.S. and European business communities, and designing border adjustments to limit carbon leakage in a manner consistent with WTO obligations is a major challenge. We encourage robust dialogue to ensure that institution of any such proposal is simple, transparent, and fair, and occurs within a timeline and process that advances our shared economic and environmental goals.”
